As you watch TV, movies, or sporting events, have you ever thought that some celebrities seem like they are almost too glamorous to be human? They put a lot of work into projecting that image, but the truth is that they are just like normal folks; they have many of the same struggles and infirmities as the average Joe down the street. For example, many celebrities have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. What exactly is sleep apnea, and who are some stars that have it? This blog post provides some interesting information.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
There are multiple types of sleep apnea, but obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is the most common. It is a disorder that occurs when tissues in the upper airway, such as the tongue or soft palate, over-relax during sleep and block the free flow of oxygen. This leads to repeated pauses in breathing. These episodes, called apneas, disrupt the sleep cycle and can cause daytime exhaustion and an increased risk of numerous health problems, including heart attack and stroke. It is estimated that tens of millions of Americans have OSA.
Athletes with OSA
Lots of athletes seem like models of good health, but some of them are victims of OSA. For example, Shaquille O’Neal, who is often touted as one of the best NBA players in history, has been diagnosed with OSA.
Reggie White, a well-known NFL player in the 1980s and 1990s, also struggled with OSA. Sadly, he died after suffering a heart attack that was worsened by complications from his OSA. JaMarcus Russell, another prominent football player, is yet another athlete with this disorder. He once said that his condition made him feel so exhausted that he drifted off to sleep during team meetings!
Other Celebrities with OSA
OSA is not exclusive to athletes. Other celebrities who have been diagnosed with OSA include Roseanne Barr, Randy Jackson, Larry the Cable Guy, Amy Poehler, and even President Joe Biden. Mr. Biden’s condition became public knowledge in 2023, after observers saw the marks left on his face by a CPAP mask.
Fighting OSA
Fortunately, some of the above-listed celebrities have taken firm action to manage their condition and enjoy high-quality rest. If you have been struggling to get enough sleep, you can follow their example! Sleep apnea treatment is readily accessible; many people have found success with a custom oral appliance from a qualified dentist.
Sleep apnea can affect anyone, even wealthy and famous individuals! Whether you are a rising star or an ordinary person, you should monitor the quality of your sleep and do all you can to get the shuteye that your body needs to thrive.
