Dental crowns are used to treat teeth that are misshapen or that have suffered decay beyond a filling’s ability to repair. These restorations mimic the shape, color, and luster of natural teeth and can restore much of a compromised tooth’s strength and chewing ability. If you’re scheduled to receive a dental crown but have never gotten one before, it’s understandable that you might be nervous about the procedure. Here’s a brief guide of what to expect when receiving a dental crown.
Why Are Dental Crowns Necessary?
Your dentist might recommend a dental crown to treat a variety of dental health issues, including:
- Restoring a tooth compromised by decay, injury, or a root canal.
- Concealing discoloration or a large filling.
- Anchoring a dental bridge in place.
- Reinforcing a misshapen tooth.
Getting a Dental Crown the Old-Fashioned Way
Dental crowns are traditionally placed in two appointments. During the first, your dentist will examine your mouth and numb the tooth being treated with a local anesthetic. They will then prepare your tooth by removing any decayed or damaged structure. Once it has been prepared, your dentist will take an impression of your bite. This impression will be sent to the lab that will manufacture your crown and you will receive a temporary crown to protect your tooth until the permanent one can be placed.
The second appointment will happen a few weeks later when your permanent crown comes in. Your tooth will be numbed and the temporary crown will be removed. Your permanent crown will be cemented in place, and you will be sent on your way to enjoy your new smile.
Getting CEREC Same-Day Crowns
If your dentist uses CEREC technology, they can place a dental crown in a single appointment. After your tooth is numbed and prepared for a dental crown, your dentist will use a special device to scan your mouth and create a 3D map of its structure. A machine will then use this data to mill down a block of ceramic material to create your beautiful new crown. This crown will be cemented to your tooth, and you will be able to head out and start smiling at people immediately afterward.
While you can expect some soreness for a few days after the procedure, it will fade over time and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. After that, your tooth will be beautiful and back in biting shape.
